Eek!
07.31.08 (10:44 am) [edit]
Somehow, after stumbling into a job as an artist's assistant, I've also stumbled onto what may become my career. I've been doing egg art for a few years now, and I've been given the opportunity of showing them in my boss's studio. Beyond that, I've also landed a spot in an art show.
It's a little unnerving. I've never pursued this as a career because I never considered myself very good at art. I can't draw a bloody stick figure properly! And yet, it seems like, for now at least, this is what I'm supposed to be doing.
Here's some pics:
The first is of a spiral cut egg. This is the most unstable one I've ever done, and it's a miracle I finished it. Unfortunately, I broke it while I was painting it. Not entirely unexpected for this one. I've repaired it, but I'm keeping it for myself.
The second one is one that I gave my boss. It's pink with a fleur de lis symbol, and a charm at the bottom.
The third is called ribbons. I just wrapped it up today, but I have no finished pics yet.

The first one is simple and elegant- you must have a steady hand. But, you broke it in the process. Maybe you should do hand modeling? Seems I remember, somewhere far back into my foggy mind, a comedy (Woody Allen?) about a lady who was a hand model? I guess such exists.

OH WOW! - Your work is incredible!!! Truely! Best of everything in your new venture!
*( Ps. - There are such things as hand models, My daughter in law's Mom was one, and you'd be good at that too!)

Technically, I didn't break it in the process. I broke it while it was in the box, on the way from my mom's house for painting. It survived the carving and the painting, and broke in the transportation. But I knew I'd never be able to sell it. Cutting it in that direction takes all the strength away from the shape. I've managed far more intricate cuts, but as long as it retains its shape vertically, there isn't usually a problem.

Thank you, PG. I am looking forward to it, but I'm also very nervous about it. And hand modeling is not for me. Are you looking at my awful nails, and my fat little sausage fingers? :D

That is pretty amazing! Like Confucius said, "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." Best of luck!
